Although Bas is Halsten’s co-founder and managing director, he also carries his share of the load in the practice. He is involved with clients as general counsel while also playing a broad advisory role, with an additional focus on national and international contracting and renewable energy.
“Over the years, I have gained broad legal experience and had the drive to create companies, and in my free time, I studied business administration. All this not only brought about Halsten, but also means that I am eager to look beyond the substance of the legal issue at hand. What will the impact be on the organisation, the position in the market or the business case? Is there a different way to address a legal risk? What are we trying to achieve? All these considerations play a part in my discussions and advice. My broad perspective is somewhat contrary to the trend of extensive specialisation. That is a deliberate choice: I don’t want to be restricted by blinders, which would not only prejudice the role I play at Halsten but also be contrary to what clients expect from me. Above all: I am interested in far too many things.
That is why I enjoy tackling new subjects. I accidentally came across my first wind energy project, but now we are a respected participant in that regard. This has led to many new and different cases and collaborations, including corporate and other PPAs, heat transport, energy storage and innovation projects. The energy transition has switched into top gear: it is a process that fascinates me, and I love being in the thick of things.
What we are doing at Halsten is tremendously challenging. In a highly conservative sector, our business model is disruptive. We are shaking up the market and demonstrating that there is a different way, and I am proud of that. However, our work has only just begun in that regard. Although me and my alarm clock are not always on good terms, I enthusiastically start each day with an eagerness to achieve more!”
